KNOXVILLE, Iowa – If you’re considering increasing the size of your beef herd, a series of three southern Iowa county-based programs could offer helpful information and resources. The educational program “Responsible expansion of Iowa’s cow herd” is provided by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and will offer a variety of topics pertinent to that deliberation.

ISU extension beef specialist Patrick Wall will lead discussion at all locations, and said each event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a meal.

“Potential topics could include nutritional management of first-calf heifers, breeding strategies for yearling heifers, animal selection, and buying versus raising replacements,” he said. “Some of the conversation will focus on appreciation and depreciation, opportunity and risk, and management practices to reduce replacement rate.”

Dates and locations are:
August 27, Columbus Junction
August 28, Hedrick
Sept. 3, Keosauqua

New Iowa Beef Center director and extension feedlot specialist Aimee Wertz-Lutz will attend the Hedrick location.

Those who plan to attend any location should register no later than August 21 by calling any of these county extension offices:
