Update for Veterinarians program to be held June 26 in Chariton
5/22/25
AMES, Iowa – The 2025 Update for Veterinarians program will take place on June 26 at the McNay Research Farm near Chariton. The annual Iowa State Extension program offers timely information and education for large and mixed animal veterinarians with a focus on beef cattle production.
Practitioners who work with cattle will hear from Iowa State University experts on vitamins, heifer development, colostrum, dung beetles, and parasitology according to Chris Clark, beef field specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach and program organizer.
The morning session will begin with a presentation from Garland Dahlke, nutritionist and research scientist with the Iowa Beef Center and Department of Animal Science at ISU.
“Building upon previous nutrition topics, Garland will discuss vitamins in ruminant nutrition, including general information about animal requirements and information about when and how to supplement,” Clark said.
Randie Culbertson, assistant professor and cow-calf specialist with ISU Extension, will follow with a session on heifer development highlighting a recent ISU research project. Megan Hindman, clinical assistant professor at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine, will present on colostrum and share a recent ISU research project on dung beetles. Lastly, Matt Brewer, associate professor at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine, will discuss topics in parasitology.
“The Update for Veterinarians program will include timely topics such as an update on the New World Screwworm situation as part of the parasitology discussion. Research that has been done at the ISU McNay Farm will also be shared in the heifer development and dung beetle study presentations,” Clark said. “This program will include useful information that veterinarians can take home and use right away in their practices.”
